OUGD601 - Briefing

Deadline before Christmas – 18/12/18

·       Review the cop three proposal slides to make sure the content of the presentation is correct

Module aims:
·       To define an individual analytical and evaluative research interest within the study of art and design contexts.
·      To develop skills in appropriate written and practical research and evaluative formats that reflect an understanding commensurate with BA (Hons) Level 6 academic practices.
·      To employ a synthesised understanding of theoretical and practical contexts of individual creative practices and concerns.

1.     Independence is key, represent yourself and your practice with the learning process.

2.     Check over the learning outcomes in the module information on completion of each draft to make sure that you have hit each aspect of such.

3.    Theoretical practice link between your practical work and written work.

4.    This is not about anything else other than graphic design, what do you do with information once you have it. What will you do with that information? How will you analyse it?

5.    Need to be evidencing the theoretical research you are completing, evidencing each piece of research through blogs and notes.

6.    Cross referencing with primary research, but only when it is needed; as when you are producing things you will already be testing what is working for that response and how it deals with the product.

7.    Evidence of organisation plan and effectively manage your self-directed time. Communicate this through blogs and make it evident that you are working towards such.

Indictive content:

Students will develop a cohesive research project, with practical and textual outcomes, in response to a proposal developed during the later stages of the Level 5 course.
This module will require the students to organise and undertake a personal course of in-depth critical research, to collate and present a coherent written argument and related practical investigation based on analysis and evaluation, presented in the form of an extended formal written study and related practice-based research. The chosen subject will be relevant to a student’s main course of study and will be used to support and inform their specialist practice. The extended study involves self-motivated research but will be supported by individual tutorials aimed at helping the student to develop the appropriate scope and depth of subject matter required within such a project.
The work undertaken will reveal the student’s appreciation and application of research approaches and methodologies.

Context:This module will be used to inculcate a synthesised academic understanding of both the context of practice and the nature of practice itself. It will also provide a theoretical platform from which student’s Extended Practice module may develop. This module represents a culmination of three years of development in researching, academic writing and critical thinking whereby student's abilities will be directed towards resolving an individually specified research problem.

Brief:
You will produce a 5,000-word extended essay AND a related practical outcome in response to an agreed question / title. The culmination and development of your project will be thoroughly documented on your context of practice blog.
Your essay should include an introduction to your theme, the development of an argument (demonstrating that you understand the topic of your essay) followed by a conclusion that makes clear your position at the culmination of your enquiries. The essay and practical work will be assessed as a unified research project based on the criteria set out in the module specification and therefore will evidence your developed appreciation and understanding of the interrelatedness of theory and practice in the field of Graphic Design.

Your extended essay will be bound and presented to academic expectations of which will be detailed by the module tutors. It is expected as pre-requisite that your written piece follows any and all academic conventions established in previous CoP modules - such as the formal layout of the text, positioning of images, and use of Harvard referencing throughout.
Your extended essay must not exceed 10% of the word limit or fall under 10% of the word limit. It will be referenced throughout using the Harvard referencing system and will contain a bibliography.

Ethical consideration must be done! Make sure if you’re using human participants, then approval is needed from your supervising tutor and fill out the appropriate form that can be acquired from the student welfare team.

Ensure you bring something to discuss to each of the supervisory meetings.

Use google scholar to see how people have used the citied work that you use in other sections.

Pick up some textbooks, research from uni of library and build up and understanding of your theoretical context.
