As I have been completing my research I believe that my design should be a multipurpose product, something that can be made into an A3 poster to be put in the appropriate areas and also an A4 flyer. As I was saying earlier focusing around the idea of having the relevant key policy from the Green Party in the corresponding area such as #FREEEDUCATION in student areas etc. to gain notoriety amongst and audience that is relevant. Therefore, gaining more party notoriety for the political stance of the party through advertisement and branding. Something that I know is key to the Green Party is their values in environmentally friendly consciousness. Thus I will be experimenting on printing in different materials such as recycled paper, I will also be keeping colour to the key two colours found in their pre-existing branding. Green and black will be the basis for all of the designs, as well as making the Green key to the piece and visually relating it back to the party instantly when people see it, the use of green and black save ink and helps minimise the use of energy and ink when printing the posters; coinciding with the Green Parties beliefs.
This design would be perfect to be a screen print; as a further development of an original sketch it involves all the needed information. Including the hashtag found it the Green Parties branding elsewhere. This could be done as a two-layer screen print which would be interesting to print onto different sizes of scrapped paper, taking the idea to the extreme that it should be made out of recycled materials, to give a deeper insight into the policies of the Green Party. The logo would be overlaying the entire image this would give the instant recognition of which party this poster/flyer would be representing the Green Party, something which I noticed in my research that some of the different party posters where missing out on. Although in my feedback this idea was left as the design, from feedback I learnt that the text became hard to read because of the two overlaying layers; making the poster redundant. It was also discussed that in my initial ideas I wanted to be more assertive about how the other parties had ruined things that these key policies the Green Party have could fix, although this poster was lacking such information, but by adding it, it would only further complicate the design making it illiterate.
My second design was more successful in terms of it including the different things that the opposing parties had done to bring the Green Party the need to develop a policy to help. This is done in form of a chronologically ordered timeline including quick bullet points of what change was made which contradicts the Green Parties policy and under what government it was done. I think this is important because of its almost passive aggressive nature, by showing the audience the downfall of the other parties they will gain more trust in the Green party. I have used the colour green here to link any parts of the piece that is about the Green Party, including the logo, the policy and the 2020. Giving a visual link between the brand and its beliefs as well as subliminally dropping in the date of the next general election, in the colours of all of the parties branding; again giving this link of when the audience sees green they think green party. This was more successful also in terms of feedback as it checks all of the points I made in my defining the brief section, although I believe the green needs to be more prominent to be able to reaffirm this visual link to the brand identity and give them a stronger level of notoriety. I also think there is a little too much white space on the piece. It was mentioned in peer assessment that the design may possibly be lost if printed on recycled paper, due to the amount of brown that would be surrounding the green, which would already have the texture coming through. In terms of typography the piece embodies the branding that is pre-existing of the Green Party, therefore showing how the identity needs to be stronger but doesn’t need to change. This could work both as a flyer and a poster, although would be stronger as a flyer because of the small text found in the timeline section.
This is my final design, again an adaptation of my original sketches. This design is both design and eco conscious, which is what I wanted to create. The use of white space within the green structured speech bubble acts as another text colour allowing me to create this three tone piece. The speech bubble is resembling the voice of the green party, reminiscing on the mistakes of the competition but not dwelling on it rather creating a solution, which can be found below in Bebas Neue, the brands typeface used within their visual identity. The print itself sticks to the idea of only using black and green, and the print would be done on recycled paper; therefore, the texture would come through the ink, giving the look of a screen print. This, as well as exemplifying the policies of the Green Party in a subliminal way, would make it stand out from any other political flyer as it is something no other party do. The colour of green used is the exact same green found in the logo, giving a sense of brand identity and unity to the piece. The way in which the piece has a gridded but unusual composition is modernistic and therefore aiming towards a younger market, the target demographic I identified originally. This design proved to be most popular when it came to peer assessment, as it met my criteria whilst concise giving across the message of the parties’ policies. We also discussed how this worked well to be able to print on recycled paper because of the amount of colour it would give the media a sense of the brand whilst still retaining its texture.
