Study Task 1: Setting a research question

Focus on a specific discipline within Graphic Design:

  • Branding
  • Packaging
  • Advertising
  • Editorial
  • Design for screen
The question should be open-ended, to leave room for more of a debate/discussion
The question must allow for theoretical research-based discussion, as well as visual exploration to develop a relevant outcome.

Do something that would work for your practice.
Have some initial research into current developments in the industry, and how much literature there is based on your topic area.

Initial Idea:
CoP 1: researched into political branding strategies and the way in which the world of political design borrows ideas from commerce to make them more successful, or are both very separate spheres needed as a co-reliance to remain successful. I have always have retained a great interest in politics and feel as if when in the creative industry it is important to consider the way politics and design both influence and carry each other.

Initial Questions Ideas:
  1. Big conglomerate's influence on political sway.
  2. Evidence of modern day propaganda and its influence on societies view on particular issues.
Chosen question/essay direction:
Evidence of modern day propaganda and its influence on societies views on particular issues.

Feedback:
After discussing my idea with Simon and where I should go with my research I have decided that propaganda is not the correct word to be exploring in my research, rather politically fuelled amateur artwork. I feel as if in such a time of political uproar and uncertainty across not only the UK but globally, this will be a topic that can be discussed in depth and also have a lot of relevant information a literature as of current. The focus could be on a particular link to the graphic design work that is evident within amateur and street art and the current political issues within our country, or further afield.
