Development of Magazine Grid

As can be seen below (through the use of Kinfolk as an example) lifestyle fashion magazines used a grid in which normally is centrally aligned using negative space around compositions to be able to create an interesting hierarchy between image and information. White space is key in keeping the content the focus, whilst offering a visually modern aesthetic to ensure the information that is being given is as on trend as the magazine design itself. These are considerations I will be taking into account when producing a grid for my design and considering the layout of the internal information.

Grid Analysis:

Grid Analysis
The grid that is used within Kinfolk is simplistic and is carried out throughout the whole magazine. The module design allows for a lot of negative white space, which reaffirms the point I have previously made about luxury modern fashion magazines focusing around simplicity rather than packing as much content in as possible; which seems to be the visual style of more mainstream magazines such as vogue, evident from their cover.
This further exemplifies to me that the style of magazine that I should be creating follows a lifestyle fashion route, as this is the magazines the target audience I am attempting to aim the content towards to would read. I am trying to persuade a generation that brands are trying to cultivate, which is, therefore, a younger market who have not already established their brand loyalties. This consumer will be design conscious and aware of trends, this is the methods brands use to cultivate them, as I identified in my essay, therefore by using a similar technique in my design approach; through creating something visually similar to outcomes they are already interested in, the content will resonate with them more.

Chosen grid for my design:

I have chosen to use a modular grid consisting of 6 rows and 4 columns with a 3mm gutter on each. This allows for the choice of manipulation but will keep consistency throughout my design, which majority of the content will be focused towards the centre, as it is in Kinfolk, giving the feeling of space around the content, keeping to a theme of simplicity. This simplicity keeps the focus on the imagery and type itself, it also gives room for the addition of other features to further bring in the focus on the content.
